Our premier event each year is, of course, our “Rusty Iron Rally”, held at the Macksville Showground, on the northern bank of the Nambucca River, mid northern NSW. Held on Father’s Day (usually the first) weekend in September, we attract fellow collectors and restorers from as far afield as Victoria, Queensland and other states, as well as many enthusiasts who arrive on their tractors. Last year, a group of hardy souls drove their machines up from the Bulahdelah area, taking in all the back roads over the four day trip. Previous Rallies have featured two Steam traction engines together, a 52 ton Centurion Tank, a Tug-of-war between a tractor and a V8 Mack truck, and lots of other fun and games. Vintage trucks, cars, and motorbikes are also on display. Each year, at least one local area charity benefits financially from money raised at our rally.

Each year the club chooses a particular brand or type of tractor and of engine to feature at the “Rusty Iron Rally”, with judging being carried out by experts in each section. Several awards are made specifically in junior categories, as well as many encouragement certificates. Our individually produced trophies, reflecting the vintage machinery theme, are highly regarded and much envied.

A Grand Parade of vehicles takes place around the oval track in front of the Grandstand just after lunch each day; although for the 2012 Rally we will have to divide the vehicles into before and after lunch parades due to the great number attending.

Tractor Treks

Each year our club holds a number of Tractor Treks, of 1 or 2 days duration, when members, whose vehicles meet the RTA requirements, drive them along interesting back roads where most of the good scenery is, stopping along the way for lunch at some pre-arranged spot. Usually the distance travelled ranges from 30 to 80 kms, depending on the country traversed, and speed capability of the vehicles taking part.

We have regular treks around the mid north coast area, and for the more adventurous, trips over the mountains to Inverell, or down to the Hunter Valley have been undertaken.

Tractor treks are not just for tractors either, with vintage trucks also coming along if the route is suitable…….we need something to carry the food and drinks on !

Visits to other Clubs and Rallies

Members have visited many other Clubs and Rallies over the years, either as a group inter-club visit, or individually. Some of the visits have been to Allora, Bendemeer, Biloela, Canberra, Cootamundra, Dubbo, New England, Henty, Inverell, Young, Wagga, and Sydney. In fact, there are not many places and rallies around that someone in our club has not been to at least once.

Inverell has become a popular visiting spot, with four tractors one year making the trip over the mountains to visit.

Visits to see Collections

We have been to see Collections at many of our own members’ homes in the local area, usually making the visit a part of a social day out. As these types of day out are proving to be popular, we will be trying to hold more of them in the future. It is really amazing the things people collect. From milking machinery, tyre pumps, oil lamps, vintage radios, pedal cars, rolling pins, spanners, saws, etc…… does not matter what you collect, more than one person will come up and say “I remember that, we used to have one of those when I was a kid”.
